Know the system
Retaining cables run through extension springs to help contain them if they break. High-lift, low-headroom, vertical-lift, and commercial systems may require different lengths, routing, drums, or cable construction.
Not sure what you have? Send a wide photo from the floor showing both sides and the area above the door. We can often identify the general setup before the appointment, then confirm measurements on site.
Cable matching
Cable length and load rating depend on the actual door, including its width, material, insulation, glass, track radius, and standard, high-lift, or low-headroom setup.Cables sized to the actual door.
Torsion and extension systems route lift cables differently. The spring system, tracks, drums, and pulleys must work as one balanced assembly.Spring type sets the routing.
Groove wear, seized bearings, sharp edges, loose fasteners, and damaged bottom fixtures can fray a new cable or make it leave the drum again.Worn parts can fray a new cable.
Normal wear, corrosion, poor balance, a broken spring, an obstruction, incorrect installation, or a door that went off track can all change the required repair. The cause of failure shapes the repair.
Why both lift cables may be quoted: the left and right cables usually share the same age, use, and environment. If one has failed from wear or corrosion, replacing the pair may support even operation and reduce the chance of another service call. The technician should inspect both sides and explain the recommendation before work begins.

Before you schedule
Typical residential cable service generally ranges from $150 to $400. The exact price depends on whether a cable can be safely re-seated or needs replacement, whether both lift cables are replaced, the cable and lift system, door position and access, and the condition of drums, pulleys, springs, bearings, bottom fixtures, and tracks. Custom, commercial, off-track, spring-related, and after-hours work may fall outside this range.
Do not use the opener or try to lift, lower, or release a door with a broken, loose, or off-drum lift cable. The door may be extremely heavy, crooked, or capable of falling. Keep the opening clear and have a trained technician secure and inspect it.
Common causes include normal strand fatigue, corrosion, incorrect cable length or routing, a worn drum or pulley, seized bearings, poor door balance, track or roller problems, an obstruction, a broken spring, or earlier installation errors. The cause should be corrected before the door is returned to service.
An undamaged cable that left its drum may sometimes be re-seated after the underlying cause is corrected. A cable with broken strands, kinks, flattening, corrosion, heat damage, or damaged ends should be replaced rather than patched. The technician should inspect the entire cable before recommending either option.
Often, yes. The left and right lift cables usually share the same age, use, and environment. Replacing a worn pair can support even operation and reduce the chance of a second service call, but the technician should inspect both sides and explain the recommendation before work begins.
Lift cables transfer spring force to raise and control the door. A retaining or safety cable runs through an extension spring to help contain the spring if it breaks. It is a separate safety component and does not replace the door’s load-bearing lift cables.
Look from the floor each month for fraying, rust, slack, or uneven drum wraps; keep the doorway and tracks clear; and stop if the door becomes noisy, crooked, or unbalanced. Do not adjust cables or bottom brackets. An annual professional inspection can catch wear in cables, pulleys, drums, bearings, springs, and door balance.
No. Lift cables, bottom fixtures, drums, pulleys, shafts, and related brackets can be under high spring tension. Loosening the wrong fastener or moving an unsupported door can release stored energy or let the door fall. Cable work should be performed by a trained door-system technician.
The technician should secure the door, inspect the complete counterbalance and track system, identify why the cable failed, explain the quote, install or re-seat the correct cable and required hardware, set even routing and tension, balance and cycle the door, test it with the opener, and explain the applicable warranty.
A straightforward residential cable repair can often be completed in one service appointment. The actual time depends on whether the door is open, closed, crooked, or off track; whether the cable can be re-seated or needs replacement; and whether springs, drums, pulleys, bearings, tracks, or bottom fixtures also need attention. The technician should inspect the system before giving a reliable time estimate.
Frayed or rusted strands near the bottom brackets, a cable that hangs loose or sits off its drum, and a door that lifts unevenly or hangs crooked are the usual signs. Stop using the door and keep clear of it, because a cable that snaps under tension can let one side drop.
